NBC News reports U.S. officials and scientists estimate $700B for Trump’s Greenland acquisition plan.
“New Alliance”
While some Trump administration officials suggested using military force to seize the island, others believe the U.S. will attempt to purchase Greenland or form a new alliance with it. Danish and Greenlandic authorities have repeatedly stated the island is not for sale.
President Trump maintains the U.S. must control Greenland to prevent the strategically valuable island from falling to China or Russia. EU Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius warns a U.S. military takeover would end NATO.
Increased Military Presence in Greenland
Danish armed forces have boosted their presence in and around Greenland, conducting military exercises in close cooperation with NATO allies. The autonomous territory’s authorities emphasized the exercises focus on Arctic conditions and strengthening NATO’s presence for European and Atlantic security.
The decision came during a meeting between Denmark’s and Greenland’s foreign ministers and U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, following weeks of Trump’s suggestions about potentially taking control of Greenland. President Trump has called on NATO to pressure Denmark to withdraw its troops immediately, arguing their military presence is insufficient amid growing Arctic threats from Russia and China.
