Court Postpones Hearing on Arrest of Zbigniew Ziobro

The court delayed the arrest hearing for former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro to January 15, citing gaps in the prosecutor’s evidence.

Delay Explained

The court postponed the session on the arrest of Zbigniew Ziobro to January 15, a decision made after a request from his defense.

Defense Cites Missing Evidence

Attorney Bartosz Lewandowski argued that the prosecutor failed to submit critical confidential materials that could protect the client’s interests, preventing the court from reviewing them.

Alleged Positive Evidence

Rep. Adam Gomoła highlighted that undisclosed documents relate to a key allegation about an agreement between the Ministry of Justice and the Central Anti‑Corruption Office, claiming these materials are strongly favorable for Ziobro.

Charges Against Ziobro

The prosecution accuses Ziobro of misconduct in the Justice Fund, including overstepping authority, manipulating competitions, approving contracts by unqualified parties, tolerating improper funding allocations, and hiding documents, claiming these actions served political and private gains and harmed the public interest.

Prosecutor’s Grounds for Arrest

In November, the prosecutor laid three reasons for the arrest: risk of hiding or flight, risk of grave harm suggested by media statements and allegations of leading a criminal group, and the threat of severe punishment, up to 25 years for certain charges.

Minister’s Comments

Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek said a potential arrest would allow prosecution of a politician likely abroad, noting that Ziobro could seek asylum in Hungary and possibly approach the EU Court of Justice, questioning whether a UE state could grant political asylum.
