The District Court in Kielce will hear a complaint on Oct. 29 that probes officials’ role in the May 8, 2023 death of eight‑year‑old Kamil from Częstochowa, after a prosecutor earlier closed the case.
Court Reopens the Case
The District Court in Kielce is scheduled to decide the complaint on Wednesday, October 29. The case concerns whether public officials failed to protect eight‑year‑old Kamil from abuse that led to his death.
Prosecution Previously Dropped the Investigation
In January, the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Gdańsk had dismissed the investigation into alleged neglect by authorities supervising Kamil’s family. Prosecutors said the evidence did not meet the criminal threshold under Art. 231(1) of the Polish Penal Code.
Step‑Father Accused of Abuse
Kamil’s step‑father faced charges of physical assault, including fire‑ing the child with cigarettes, beating him, throwing him against furniture, and pouring boiling water. The trial of the step‑father and Kamil’s mother began in June and both remain in custody.
Ministerial Response
Minister of Equality Katarzyna Kotula called the prosecutor’s decision “shocking and premature,” claiming it perpetuates domestic‑violence stereotypes and misses law‑enforcement accountability.
