A Polish court sentenced Błażej K. to 25 years in prison for planting a bomb that seriously injured his former partner and her two children.
The Verdict
The District Court in Zielona Góra sentenced 37-year-old Błażej K. to 25 years in prison on March 4 for attempting to murder his former partner Urszula and her two children. According to the verdict, K. will be eligible for conditional release after 20 years and has been banned from contacting the victims for 15 years. He must also pay compensation of 500,000 zł to the former partner and 200,000 zł each to her two children.
The Attack
In December 2022, K. placed a bomb of his own construction in front of the house where his former partner lived. The explosive device was designed to send hundreds of metal pieces into the victims’ bodies. When Urszula brought the package into her home and opened it in the kitchen, it detonated.
The Victims
Urszula suffered severe injuries, requiring an 8-hour life-saving operation. Surgeons managed to save her sight but had to amputate one of her hands. Her two children, 2.5-year-old Bartuś and 7-year-old Ola, were also seriously injured. Bartuś had metal pieces embedded in his back, while Ola underwent multiple surgeries for injuries to her body and eyes.
The Investigation
Investigators quickly identified K. as the perpetrator, discovering he had traveled to Germany to establish an alibi. He was arrested on January 16, 2023, at the Polish-German border crossing in Zgorzelec. K. did not plead guilty and had a history of violence against his former partner.
