Sebastian M. cross-examines police witnesses and accuses prosecution of manipulation during fatal crash trial that killed a family of three.
Fatal Crash Trial Enters Decisive Phase
The trial before the Regional Court in Piotrków Trybunalski concerns a car accident that occurred in September 2023 on the A1 highway. The collision resulted in the deaths of a three-person family from Myszków – Martyna, Patryk, and their 5-year-old son Oliwier – who died in a burning car after hitting a BMW driven by Sebastian M.
The most recent hearing showed emotions reaching their zenith, with the accused’s defense becoming increasingly offensive.
Accused Cross-Examines Police Officers
This time, no direct witnesses to the accident appeared in court, but rather police officers responsible for securing the scene and documenting the aftermath. Their questioning resulted from a defense motion by attorney Katarzyna Hebda, aimed at verifying the correctness of the authorities’ actions immediately after the A1 accident.
Sebastian M. actively participated in the cross-examinations, asking questions and challenging the investigation’s findings. This is a rare sight in court – an accused in a triple-fatality case independently questioning police officers. During previous hearings, Sebastian M. had been more restrained.
Defense Challenges Official Investigation
A criminal technician who arrived at the scene hours after the A1 accident testified that he did not analyze the causes of the tragedy or reconstruct the event. His task, as he emphasized, was exclusively photographic documentation of both vehicles and victims’ bodies.
Police officers who were at the tragic A1 accident site were questioned about preparing a sketch of the scene. The defense analyzed photos, road markings, and discrepancies between photographic documentation and drawings. Prosecutor Alexander Duda repeatedly interrupted, stating that questions to police officers exceeded witnesses’ roles.
Emotional Confrontation in Courtroom
During the discussion about a trace discovered hundreds of meters before the accident site, Sebastian M.’s parents laughed, as did attorney Hebda. This provoked strong emotional reactions from the victims’ families. The father of one victim told the accused’s parents to “show some seriousness,” while the mother of another victim was not hiding her tears.
Judge Renata Folkman immediately reacted, warning that such behaviors would not be tolerated and threatened to remove families from the courtroom if the situation repeated.
Victims’ Families Regard Mediation Attempt
Representative of the victims’ families, attorney Kowalski, commented that Sebastian M.’s attitude had clearly changed recently. “The best defense has become an attack. It’s an attempt to undermine everything established so far,” he stated.
He added that mediation between the parties had failed and that the victims’ families regretted agreeing to attempt reconciliation.
