Cuba Prepares for Potential U.S. Attack, Mobilizes Military

Cuba is bracing for possible military intervention by the United States, prompting the Cuban army to prepare for defense, according to officials.

Cuba Anticipates U.S. Intervention

Cuban authorities expect a potential intervention by U.S. forces on the island and have ordered the army to prepare to repel a possible attack, stated Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio in a Sunday interview.

Fernandez de Cossio explained to NBC News that Cuba’s armed forces are preparing for potential aggression from the U.S., stating they are “not naive” and do not underestimate the threat from Washington.

National Determination to Defend

Cuba believes in the nation’s determination to defend the country. Fernandez de Cossio stated, “We have always been able to mobilize as a nation in a situation of military aggression,” while also noting there are currently no apparent reasons for a U.S. attack.

He added that Havana is also “ready for negotiations,” but these discussions cannot concern “the nature of the Cuban government, its structure, or its members,” as that would threaten the country’s sovereignty.

Growing Domestic Discontent

According to independent media, the Havana regime fears not only a U.S. military attack but also increasing discontent among the Cuban population due to prolonged power and water outages.

Radio Marti reported that protests have been organized in several locations in Cuba, including the capital, Havana. It also reported that a recruitment center in Contramaestre, southeastern Cuba, was set on fire Friday, indicating public opposition to mandatory military service.

Energy Crisis Linked to U.S. Actions

The numerous failures of Cuba’s energy system since early March are largely due to the sudden halt in oil shipments from Venezuela, the main supplier, following the capture of its leader, Nicolás Maduro, by U.S. forces on January 3rd.

Mexico also ceased oil shipments to Cuba after the U.S. threatened tariffs on countries selling the commodity to the island.
