Vice‑Premier Gawkowski confirmed that Włodzimierz Czarzasty will assume the post of Marshal of the Polish Sejm on Tuesday, sparking a sharp exchange on live media.
Czarzasty Likely Marshal
Vice‑Premier Krzysztof Gawkowski said Czarzasty will receive a confidence vote from the Sejm and be elected marshal on Tuesday morning, despite uncertainties from the PSL and Polska 2050. Gawkowski stressed that other coalition partners, including the Together Party, pose no threat to the decision.
Vice‑Premier’s Comment Causes Shock
During the interview, Gawkowski quoted Mariusz Błaszczak’s warning that PiS would not support “communists” for the marshal’s seat. In retaliation, he remarked, “Such a communist from Czarzasty, as from Błaszczak, I don’t know, an onanist.” The comment immediately spread on social media and upset the presenter, who urged him to apologise. Gawkowski clarified that he did not intend to offend anyone and that the remark was meant as a comparison, not an insult.
Future Role in Government Uncertain
Gawkowski discussed how, after the marshal’s appointment, the coalition might balance power by removing a left‑wing vice‑premier. He indicated that such adjustments would not be made without the prime minister’s decision, and he would not comment further on his own position in the cabinet.
Hołowni’s Legacy Reviewed
The vice‑premier praised former marshal Szymon Hołowni for opening the Sejm and stabilising parliamentary work, noting the absence of night sessions and the clarity of legislative drafting. Gawkowski expressed confidence that Hołowni deserved recognition in Polish history and said he would vote for him as vice‑marshal if called upon.
Hołowni Resigns, Czarzasty to Replace
On Thursday, 13 November, Hołowni announced his resignation as marshal, effective 18 November. He will be replaced by Czarzasty, who is set to be voted into office during the next Sejm session on 18 November.
