Michal Koudelka, head of the Czech Security Information Service, warned on Monday that Russia may target a NATO member to test the Alliance’s resolve and readiness to defend its territory.
Testing NATO’s Resolve
According to the head of the Security Information Service (BIS), Russia might orchestrate an operation to evaluate the speed and decisiveness of the Alliance’s response. Koudelka stated that NATO members must unequivocally declare their unity to deter Russian aggression.
Contempt for Civilian Life
Reflecting on recent Russian strikes against Ukrainian cities, Koudelka emphasized that these attacks illustrate a profound disregard for civilian lives. He suggested that such actions provide a clear indicator of how Russia would behave if given the opportunity elsewhere.
Domestic Influence and Security Risks
The Czech intelligence chief noted that while Russian disinformation and influence operations remain active, they have not achieved the level of success the Kremlin desires within the Czech Republic.
Global Conflicts and Internal Security
Beyond the war in Ukraine, Koudelka identified the Middle East conflict as a significant threat to global security. He highlighted rising anti-Israeli protests in Europe and the U.S., citing an arson attack in Pardubice as evidence of the radicalization of pro-Palestinian movements.
Fear of Resurgent Terrorism
Koudelka warned that if these trends continue unchecked, they could evolve into the formation of left-wing terrorist groups, reminiscent of the security crises observed in Western Europe during the 1970s and 1980s.
