Czech President: Potential US Withdrawal Would Test NATO Alliance

Czech President Petr Pavel stated Wednesday that calls for NATO involvement in the Middle East conflict are inconsistent with the alliance’s purpose, and a US withdrawal would be a serious test.

President Pavel on NATO and US Involvement

Czech President Petr Pavel stated on Wednesday that expectations for NATO countries to engage in the Middle East conflict are incompatible with the nature and tasks of the alliance. He also added that a potential US withdrawal from NATO would be a significant test for its remaining members.

“First and foremost, it is important to understand that NATO was created as a defensive alliance, whose primary mission is the collective defense of the territories of member states. The United States is not being attacked, and Iran is not a member of the alliance. Therefore, calling on NATO to get involved in the conflict in the Middle East is inconsistent with the reasons and principles on which NATO was founded,” Pavel told journalists.

Implications of a Member Withdrawal

According to the Czech president, if any member of the alliance considered withdrawing, the others would have to consider what measures to take to maintain the principle of collective defense.

“I am convinced that the alliance makes sense not only for European countries, but also for Canada and the United States. If one of the members were to leave, the alliance could still function, although it would require significant effort from everyone,” Pavel said.

Trump’s Criticism and Potential Withdrawal

US President Donald Trump, in an interview published Wednesday with the British daily “Daily Telegraph,” again criticized European allies for their lack of support for the US-Israeli military operation against Iran, calling NATO a “paper tiger” and saying he was seriously considering withdrawing the US from the alliance. He later repeated the announcement of considering withdrawing the country from NATO in a conversation with Reuters.
