Police Rule Out Terrorist Attack

Shooting occurred Monday, January 19, 2026 before 10:00 at the Chribska town hall, approximately 110 kilometers from Prague. The perpetrator entered the building and began shooting at people present. One city employee died in the incident, while six others were injured, including three civilians and three police officers whose injuries are not life-threatening.

Injured Include Mayor and Woman in Critical Condition

Among the injured is Chribska Mayor Jan Mach. At least one woman sustained severe injuries. Two individuals with chest gunshot wounds were hospitalized in Usti nad Labem, while the other four were treated in Decin. Seven medical response teams were dispatched to the scene, with one seriously injured person transported by helicopter to a hospital. Psychologists are providing support to victims and witnesses.

Perpetrator Had Illegal Firearms

Police determined the perpetrator possessed illegal firearms, including two pistols and a rifle. Upon arrival, officers conducted an intervention, entering the building with the intent to neutralize the perpetrator. The perpetrator was killed by their own weapon at 10:21. Czech Interior Minister Lubomir Metnar was present at the scene.

Personal Conflict Believed to Be Motive

Police stated there is no indication of an extremist motive, with evidence pointing to a personal conflict. Investigators are examining the exact circumstances of the incident and any connections between the perpetrator and victims. The area around the town hall has been secured, and the building has been evacuated. Police have announced further investigative actions and witness interviews.
