Poland has decided to transfer up to nine MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine to support its defense against Russian aggression, with technical details currently being finalized.
Deputy Minister Confirms Decision
Polish Deputy Defense Minister Paweł Zalewski stated that the decision to transfer MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine has been made. The transfer involves up to nine older MiG aircraft to support Kyiv’s fight against Russian aggression. Current discussions with Ukraine’s Defense Ministry focus on technical details requiring clarification.
NATO Support and Aircraft Replacement
The jet donation is part of NATO’s allied policy to support Ukraine and maintain security on the Alliance’s eastern flank. The tasks of the retiring MiG-29 aircraft will be taken over by F-16 and FA-50 fighter jets.
December Developments
In early December, Poland’s General Staff announced ongoing talks with Ukraine regarding MiG-29 transfers. Later in December, President Karol Nawrocki informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that the matter had been finalized, with only formalities remaining. During their meeting at the Presidential Palace, the leaders established common strategic goals regarding security, economy, and historical issues.
Strategic Implications
Nawrocki characterized Zelensky’s visit as beneficial for Poland and Ukraine, but unfavorable for Russia. He emphasized that a clear end to the war serves the common interest of Europe, Poland, and Ukraine.
