Persistent severe cold in Warsaw has caused nine water main breaks, leaving 106 buildings without water across seven districts.
Widespread Outages Due to Extreme Cold
Continuing severe frost in Warsaw has led to multiple water supply failures. On Sunday, January 18th, MPWiK reported 8 emergency shutdowns affecting 7 districts, with a total of 83 addresses without water. Morning temperatures dropped to approximately -13°C (Warsaw station measurement), conditions that promote underground infrastructure damage like leaks and pipe bursts, necessitating emergency water shutoffs for repairs.
Specific Locations Affected
MPWiK details ongoing shutdowns: Mokotow (Postępu St., from 20:20 Jan 17, fixed by 15:00 Jan 18), Ochota (Żwirki i Wigury 51, from 08:30 Jan 18), Targowek (Mrozowska 17, from 07:15 Jan 18), Ursus (Mariana Keniga 17, fixed by 15:00 Jan 18; Andrzeja Szomańskiego & Robinia Sts., fixed by 20:00 Jan 18), Ursynów (Ludwinowska & Muzyczna Sts., from 21:00 Jan 17, fixed by 23:00 Jan 18; Poleczki & Wyczółki 19 Sts., from 18:50 Jan 17, fixed by 15:00 Jan 18), Wilanów (Biedronki St., from 03:45 Jan 18, fixed by 15:00 Jan 18), and Żoliborz (ks. Continued Cold Weather Threatens Further Disruptions
Freezing temperatures are expected to persist. IMGW-PIB issued a Level 1 warning for “severe frost” effective until 10:00 on January 20, covering Warsaw. Long-term forecasts indicate temperatures below 0°C continuing through late January, increasing the risk of further network failures during prolonged ground freezing. MPWiK accepts 24/7 reports at 994 and updates shutdown statuses as repairs progress.
