Denmark Outraged at Trump; Foreign Minister Demands Clarification

Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen has condemned President Donald Trump’s appointment of a special envoy to Greenland, demanding an explanation from the U.S. ambassador to Copenhagen.

Denmark’s Foreign Minister Outraged

Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said he was “deeply outraged” by President Trump’s announcement of a special envoy for Greenland, which he described as absolutely unacceptable. He was particularly angered by remarks that would make Greenland part of the United States.

Rasmussen added that he would seek clarification from the U.S. ambassador on this matter.

Greenland’s Leader Stays Unconvinced

Jens‑Frederik Nielsen, the premier of Greenland’s autonomous government, stated that the envoy appointment would have no impact on the island’s residents. He emphasized that Greenland decides its own future and will cooperate with other countries, including the United States, as long as that cooperation respects Greenland’s identity, values, and expectations.

Nielsen highlighted the need to preserve Greenland’s territorial integrity.

Trump’s Green Island Ambitions

President Trump has repeatedly suggested the U.S. needs Greenland’s resources for national security and has said he does not rule out using force to bring the island into the United States. He remarked that Greenland is essential for both Denmark and the world and cited foreign ships—such as those from China and Russia—encircling the island as a security concern.
