Denmark Sends Troops to Greenland Amid Escalating Dispute with Trump

Denmark deploys military to Greenland as US President Trump pressures NATO, demanding “immediate” control of the Arctic territory.

Denmark Deploys Military to Greenland

On Wednesday, January 14, it was reported that Denmark is sending troops and military equipment to Greenland. This is a reaction to statements by Donald Trump and other American politicians who say the US must take control of Greenland for security reasons. Danish media reported that the forces sent will prepare the island logistically to receive a larger contingent.

The Greenland government emphasized in its statement that the decision to increase military activity was made “in close cooperation with NATO allies.”

Sweden Sends Officers to Greenland

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced that his country has also decided to send forces to Greenland. “Today, officers from the Swedish Armed Forces are arriving in Greenland. They belong to a group from several allied countries and will prepare for further steps as part of Danish exercises ‘Operation Arctic Endurance,'” he wrote on X.

Trump Appeals to NATO: “Two Dog Teams Won’t Be Enough”

Donald Trump reacted to Denmark’s military deployment by appealing to NATO to pressure Denmark to withdraw its forces. The US president emphasized this must happen “immediately” and repeated his earlier ironic remarks about the Danish military.

Trump wrote that “two dog teams won’t be enough” to guarantee Greenland’s security against Russia and China, adding that only the US can protect the territory.

Trump: NATO More Effective with Greenland in US Hands

Trump stated Greenland is essential for building the US missile defense system called the “Golden Dome.” He warned that if Americans don’t take control, China or Russia will.

“Militarily, without the enormous power of the United States… NATO would not be an effective force or deterrent – not at all! NATO will become much more formidable when Greenland is in US hands. Anything else is unacceptable,” Trump wrote.

US, Denmark, and Greenland to Meet in Washington

On Wednesday, talks will be held in Washington with representatives from the US, Denmark, and Greenland. US Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio will discuss tensions caused by Trump’s statements with the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland.

The security situation in the Arctic region will also be addressed during the meeting.
