Dispute Over ‘Shoes’ of Virgin Mary in Gietrzwałd. Monks Appeal for Calm

A dispute has erupted over the appearance of the Virgin Mary statue in Gietrzwałd after its renovation, with some claiming it was replaced while sanctuary monks insist it’s the original.

High Probability of Replacement

There is a high probability that the famous statue of the Virgin Mary, made according to the instructions of women who received revelations, has been replaced, stated the author of a popular YouTube video. Internet users have pointed out differences in the color scheme of the statue after renovation. Shoes have also appeared, which were not in the original. However, a crown, specifically an aureola with 12 stars, did not appear.

Sanctuary Issues Statement

The Regular Canons of Gietrzwałd have issued a statement in this matter. “In connection with the false information, insinuations and attempts to incite actions based on falsehoods appearing in the media space, we feel obliged once again to present the facts regarding the figure of the Virgin Mary in the chapel of revelations,” they stated.

“The figure currently in the chapel is exactly the same one placed here on September 16, 1877. It was made in a renowned workshop in Munich and has continuously been the heart of this place since then,” the monks emphasize, adding that no intervention was made to the form of the statue. “To put it bluntly: no ‘shoes’ were added. The original polychrome, discovered under layers of time, was restored,” they explain. The monks also addressed the issue of the crown, emphasizing that the figure never had one.

Return to the Original

The current appearance is a faithful return to the original, confirmed by descriptions from the 19th century. “We call on people spreading lies and leading the faithful astray to immediately cease such actions. Spreading disinformation and sowing unrest is by its nature neither good nor proper,” reads the statement.
