Do Germans Just Act Showy? Berlin’s ‘Talk Left, Live Right’ Example

A Berlin refugee‑center proposal sparked a court battle over rare bats, revealing a clash between progressive rhetoric and conservative practice, says podcast host Urszula Ptak.

Refugee‑Center Plan Faces Legal Hurdle amid Bat Claims

A proposal to build a refugee center in a courtyard between apartment blocks in a Berlin district was halted when residents sued, citing a rare bat species living on the site. The court stopped the construction and the project may ultimately be abandoned, according to podcast host Urszula Ptak, who remarked, “It’s not that simple.”

Polish‑Owned Podcast Highlights Contradiction

Ptak criticised the center as disturbing the “harmonious neighbourhood” and noted that in a recent episode she summarized the situation, quoting her counterpart Grzegorz Sroczyński: “We are very progressive, but we live very conservatively.”

The ‘Talk Left, Live Right’ Slogan

Ptak explained that in German there is a saying that she feels captures the society’s paradox: “Links reiten, rechts lieben” – “talk left, live right.” The phrase underscores the perceived hypocrisy of German elites.

German Formalism in Migrant Relations

In the podcast, Ptak described Germans as highly formalised and emotionally blocked when dealing with migrants. She said they read emotions instantly, knowing whether someone is tense, and that in Berlin and other large German cities, migrant groups are large and interact mentally and practically within their own reality. She noted that Germans often disappear from migrants’ horizons, highlighting a disconnect.

Language Lessons Bridge Cultural Gap

Ptak, who teaches German to immigrants, often becomes the only European with whom they have daily contact. She added that many of these migrants return to Poland, bringing with them personal experiences of the country.
