Dobrzyński Defends ORMO Past, Declares “I Will Not Fear Your Threats”

Polish former ORMO member Jacek Dobrzyński claims his 1986 activism was purely civic, denies abuse, and threatens to ignore hostile backlash amid renewed scrutiny after IPN documents leaked.

Spokesperson Statement: “I Did Not Harm Anyone”

Polish former ORMO member Jacek Dobrzyński issued a public statement after IPN documents were released. He claims his activities in the mid‑1980s were purely civic, describing himself as a “social traffic inspector” and later a regional police officer. Dobrzyński maintains he never concealed these roles, asserts he caused no harm, and that he will not withdraw from public life despite a wave of threats and harassment.

IPN Documents

Records from the Institute of National Remembrance confirm Dobrzyński was accepted into ORMO in the autumn of 1986. They include a handwritten pledge he signed, promising loyalty to the homeland and assistance to public order authorities. Support for his application came from the unit commander of the local ORMO team, citing his impeccable record, while the final decision was made by the District ORMO Staff in early November 1986.

Contents of Membership Questionnaire

The same files also contain Dobrzyński’s “ORMO Membership Questionnaire” dated 4 November 1986. In the section about other affiliations the abbreviation “ZSMP” appears, standing for the Union of Socialist Polish Youth, a youth organization linked to the Polish United Workers’ Party that supplied cadres and ideological training for the regime. Membership in such organizations was common among young people in the 1980s.

What were ORMO and ZSMP?

The Volunteer Reserve of the Citizens’ Militia was a paramilitary formation subordinated to the Polish People’s Republic’s authorities. After martial law was introduced, ORMO was associated with police‑martial suppression of demonstrations, intimidation of the opposition, and support for repressive apparatuses. The organization remained active until it was formally disbanded in November 1989 as a symbol of the old system. ZSMP, on the other hand, was responsible for ideological mobilization of youth and for preparing cadres for the communist party; its membership was widespread during the PRL period.

Government Spokesperson Defends

Government spokesperson Adam Szłapka addressed the allegations, suggesting that Dobrzyński’s involvement was limited and perhaps insignificant. “I believe the spokesperson is responding to these accusations,” Szłapka said on 17 December during a press conference. He asserted that no media reports had ever mentioned the former PiS MP prosecutor Piotrowicz or the former deputy minister in Jarosław Kaczyński’s cabinet being prosecuted for participating in patriotic actions on 11 November.
