“Don’t Buy”: Is a Major Boycott of US Products Coming?

European consumers increasingly avoid US products amid Greenland tensions, with Danish boycott apps topping app charts.

Danish Consumers Boycott US Products

Some consumers are paying special attention to product origins: US goods are no longer making it into their shopping carts. In Denmark, the conflict over Greenland is particularly prompting some to boycott American food.

Apps Help Avoid American Goods

Apps are helping Danes avoid US products in supermarkets. One such app is “UdenUSA” (“Without USA”), which suggests alternative products, allowing consumers to support European businesses. The idea seems to be well-received: on Thursday (22.01.2026), “UdenUSA” ranked first among the most downloaded free apps in the Danish App Store.

Growing Anti-American Sentiment in Germany

In neighboring Germany, the direct effects are smaller, but the topic concerns many people. “Certainly, some will consider what actions they can take to avoid American products,” says Katharina Gangl, director of the Institute for Market Decisions in Nuremberg. Germany traditionally has a certain anti-Americanism. The IFH study shows that for 61 percent of respondents, some American products like Tesla are no longer an option.

Retailers Report No Impact So Far

So far, no effects have been noted for retail food sales. According to information from Lidl, there are no visible changes in Germany in the sale of American products. “We are not experiencing protests. Demand for the relevant products still exists,” says Philipp Hennerkes from the industry association BVLH.

Boycott Movement Takes Root in Denmark

As a result of the wave of protests in Denmark, a “Boycott US Goods” group was created on Facebook in 2025, where Danes exchange information on how best to avoid American products. The group now has over 110,000 members. For comparison: Denmark has about six million inhabitants.
