Dozens of kilos of dead fish found at Vistula water intake

On November 25, 2025, Warsaw’s Polish Anglers Association notified the Warsaw Environmental Protection Inspectorate of dozens of kilograms of dead fish at the Vistula intake feeding the Siekierki Power Station.

Incident Reported

On November 25, 2025, the Mazowiecki Region of the Polish Anglers Association informed the Warsaw Environmental Protection Inspectorate (WIOŚ) about a large number of dead fish in the river water intake channel from the Vistula to the Siekierki Power Station. Inspectors were dispatched to the site.

Inspectors Investigate

WIOŚ inspectors examined the location and the pumping installations that draw water from the Vistula. They found numerous dead fish on the technological walkway adjacent to the water‑suction equipment.

Findings at Channel

It is estimated that the dead fish amount to dozens of kilograms. The fish measured between 10 and 30 cm and many bore obvious signs of mechanical damage. Most were located on the walkway associated with water‑extraction installations.

Bird Activity

Waterbirds were observed around the channel during the inspection, though no further dead fish were recorded after the initial finding.

Environmental Assessment

WIOŚ continues to investigate the incident. The operating company is conducting an internal inquiry to determine the exact cause. Authorities will assess whether the event constitutes environmental damage and whether remedial or additional protective measures are required.
