Municipalities across Poland are drastically raising waste disposal fees, pushing a four-person family’s annual costs over 2,500 zł.
Why Are Waste Disposal Fees Rising? Municipalities Cite Three Main Reasons.
Practically nationwide, municipalities are raising fees for waste disposal in response to rising operational costs. Higher energy, fuel, and labor costs are causing resident fees to increase by as much as 20-25% in many localities.
Record Rates in Polish Municipalities: Up to 53 zł Per Person
Media reports show resolutions on fee hikes have been passed in cities like Rybnik, Bielsko-Biała, Garwolin, and Nowy Sącz. Authorities in Rybnik and Bielsko-Biała state that resident fees no longer cover the actual costs of waste collection and processing. The rate in Bielsko-Biała has increased from 28 to 35 zł, with some parts of the country reaching 53 zł per person.
A Family of Four Faces Staggering Annual Costs
The drastic fee hikes have made waste disposal one of the largest household expenses. At 53 zł per person, a four-person family’s monthly cost rises to 212 zł, totaling over 2,544 zł annually.
Can Increases Be Halted? Experts Point to One Solution
Experts warn that fees will continue to rise. They suggest the only viable solution is implementing an Extended Producer Responsibility mechanism, shifting waste management costs to companies that place packaging on the market. They also call for legal revisions to better protect citizens from further financial burdens.
