Drastic Increase in Waste Collection Fees: Up to 212 zł Monthly for One Family

Polish municipalities are raising waste collection fees across the country due to rising operational costs.

Why are garbage collection fees increasing? Municipalities give three main reasons

In practically the entire country, municipalities are increasing fees for waste collection, responding to rising costs related to system operations. More expensive energy, fuels, and higher employment costs are causing rates for residents to increase by even 20-25% in many localities.

Although local authorities emphasize that this is a necessary adjustment to market realities, for residents it means another burden on household budgets.

Record rates in Polish municipalities: Even 53 zł per person

As reported by media, resolutions regarding increases in garbage collection fees have appeared, among others, in Rybnik, Bielsko-Biała, Garwolin, and Nowy Sącz. Authorities of the first two municipalities admit that revenues from resident fees are no longer sufficient to cover the actual costs of waste collection and processing.

For example, in Bielsko-Biała the rate increased from 28 to 35 zł, and in some parts of the country it has already reached the level of 53 zł per person.

2+2 family against the wall: Annual waste collection cost terrifies

The drastic increase in waste collection fees makes expenses for this purpose one of the largest to be paid. 53 zł for a single person means an expense of 212 zł for a four-person family, which amounts to over 2544 zł annually.

Can the increases be stopped? Experts point to one solution

Experts emphasize that fees will continue to rise, and the only real way to halt this process is to introduce an extended producer responsibility mechanism, which transfers waste processing costs to companies introducing packaging to the market.

A necessary change in regulations is also needed, aimed at more effectively protecting citizens from further financial burdens.
