A 21-year-old driver in Płońsk lost his license after performing a drift maneuver on a gas station parking lot last Sunday, only to stop directly in front of a police vehicle.
A reckless performance
Slippery surfaces after rain are a warning for some to drive cautiously, but for others, they serve as a temptation for dangerous displays. A momentary thrill can lead to a loss of vehicle control and serious legal repercussions, as one young driver discovered when he decided to drift at a local gas station.
Surprised by a police patrol
On Sunday, June 7, traffic officers from the Płońsk police department were patrolling the city when they spotted a Skoda performing maneuvers on a gas station parking lot. The driver was attempting to force the vehicle into a skid and rotate it around its own axis.
As the officers pulled into the lot, the driver, unaware of the cruiser, finished his drift and stopped hood-to-hood with the police car. The sight of the officers came as a major surprise to the 21-year-old resident of Płońsk, who admitted that the rain-soaked pavement had tempted him to test the vehicle’s limits.
Legal consequences for dangerous maneuvers
Police remind drivers that under Article 86c of the Code of Petty Offenses, intentionally causing a vehicle to skid or lifting wheels off the ground is an offense. These regulations apply not only to public roads but also to traffic and residential zones, including parking lots.
Because the maneuver can easily lead to accidents, authorities advise those interested in controlled drifting to utilize race tracks or specialized driving centers under professional supervision. For his actions, the 21-year-old had his driving license suspended for three months, received a 1,500 PLN fine, and was issued 10 penalty points.
