Polish prosecutors have requested a three-month arrest for a 57-year-old driver following the death of MP Łukasz Litewka, 36, in a bicycle accident in Dąbrowa Górnicza.
Investigation into the Death of Łukasz Litewka: Charges Filed, Arrest Warrant Sought
Prosecutors have filed a request with the District Court in Dąbrowa Górnicza for a temporary arrest warrant for the driver, with a hearing expected to take place no earlier than Saturday morning. The prosecution is seeking a three-month detention period.
The court may approve the request or impose alternative measures, such as police supervision.
Charges of Negligence Leading to Fatal Accident
On Friday, the 57-year-old man was charged under Article 177, paragraph 2 of the Polish Penal Code, relating to negligent violation of traffic rules resulting in death. Prosecutor Bartosz Kilian stated the charge centers on the driver’s unintentional failure to adhere to traffic regulations and causing the death of MP Litewka.
Driver Admits Guilt, Claims Memory Lapses
The driver has admitted guilt and provided extensive testimony, reportedly exhibiting inconsistencies between memory loss, momentary distraction, and complete lack of recollection regarding the incident. However, prosecutors believe these statements may form a defense strategy.
Medical examinations conducted on Friday indicated the driver’s health is good.
Toxicology Tests Ordered
Prosecutors intend to conduct a comprehensive toxicology analysis to determine if any psychoactive substances were present in the driver’s system at the time of the accident.

Łukasz Litewka, a 36-year-old MP from the Left party and organizer of numerous charitable initiatives, died tragically on Thursday afternoon while cycling on Kazimierzowska Street in Dąbrowa Górnicza.
Preliminary Findings of the Investigation
According to the prosecution, the 57-year-old driver veered into the opposite lane and collided with the cyclist. The driver faces up to eight years imprisonment if convicted. Initial investigations suggest the car was functioning properly and the driver was not speeding. No brake marks were found at the scene.
Police: No Evidence of Intent
Police have stated there is currently no evidence to suggest the incident was intentional. They are conducting intensive investigations to clarify all circumstances of the accident.
