A 33-year-old BMW driver in Otwock, Poland, attempted to evade a sobriety checkpoint and then drank beer while being apprehended, believing it would obstruct legal proceedings.
Attempt to Evade Police Checkpoint
A 33-year-old driver attempted to avoid a sobriety checkpoint (“Trzeźwość”) in the Otwock district by fleeing when he spotted police. Officers noticed his evasive maneuver and initiated a pursuit.
Despite clear visual and audible signals to stop, the driver ignored commands and continued to flee. He eventually drove onto a private property and exited the vehicle.
Attempt to Obstruct Justice
The driver immediately opened a beer and attempted to drink it in front of the officers, mistakenly believing that consuming alcohol after being stopped would prevent them from accurately determining his level of intoxication.
Police intervened before he could drink the beer and detained him.
Test Results and Charges
A breathalyzer test revealed a blood alcohol content of 0.4 promille. Further testing confirmed the driver was also under the influence of marijuana.
The 33-year-old now faces two charges: failing to stop for a traffic control and driving under the influence of drugs. He claimed he acted on misinformation suggesting alcohol consumption would shield him from legal responsibility.
License Suspended, Court Decision Pending
Police have suspended the driver’s license. A court will determine his further punishment, and he will need to use alternative transportation in the meantime.
