At 9:40 p.m. on December 18, a Volkswagen Taigo veered onto a Warsaw tramway at Banacha Street, leaving the vehicle hanging on the edge and forcing trams to halt.
Incursion on Banacha Tram Tracks
A Volkswagen Taigo driver entered the tram tracks on Banacha Street, Ochota, in the early evening of December 18. The vehicle became suspended on the track edge, blocking tram movement.
Circumstances of the Crash
Initial reports say the driver came from Grójecka Street, turned onto Banacha, and instead of entering the road, steered straight onto the tramway. The track here is partially composed of concrete slabs. When the concrete section ends, vehicles fall into a deeper part, increasing the likelihood of a car hanging and being unable to self‑exit.
Response and Recovery
Tram services in Warsaw extracted the car, with tramway instructors on site. During the operation, tram traffic was temporarily suspended. No injuries were reported.
Wider Context of Repeated Incidents
This is not the first incident on these tracks. A few days earlier, a drunken BMW driver similarly entered the tram tracks, also causing a tram service interruption.
