Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs asserts that Russia is intentionally redirecting Ukrainian drones into Baltic airspace using electronic warfare to fuel propaganda, prompting an apology from Kyiv to its allies.
Accusations of Electronic Sabotage
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Heorhiy Tychyj, stated that Russia is deliberately forcing Ukrainian drones toward the Baltic states. He emphasized that these nations have never permitted their airspace to be used for attacks against Russia, countering recent Kremlin narratives.
In a statement posted on social media, Tychyj expressed regret to Estonia and Baltic partners for the unintended incidents caused by Moscow’s interference, noting that Russia employs such maneuvers to coincide with intensified propaganda efforts.
Military Intervention and Cooperation
Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur confirmed that a NATO F-16 fighter jet intercepted and shot down a suspected Ukrainian drone in Estonian airspace near Lake Voertsjoarv. Simultaneously, Latvian military officials reported a similar breach of their national airspace by an unmanned aerial vehicle.
Kyiv has assured that it is working closely with the relevant Baltic institutions to prevent future occurrences, reiterating that Ukraine has never requested to utilize the airspace of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, or Finland for military operations.
Legal Justification for Self-Defense
Tychyj reaffirmed that Ukraine exercises its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter, focusing its strikes on legitimate military targets within Russian territory. He maintained that Moscow bears sole responsibility for the consequences of its aggressive war, rejecting attempts to shift blame onto neighboring states.
