Drunk Driver Attempts to Bribe Officer After Crash; Faces Up to 8 Years in Prison

Incident Overview

On Monday, December 8, a 40‑year‑old driver of a Mazda struck a gate in Rzekun (Ostrołęka County) after repeatedly honking while merging onto a parking lot. He later entered a shop, returned, and immediately crashed into the gate before police intervened.

Police Response

An officer approached the vehicle, questioned the driver about intoxication, and noted a strong odor of alcohol. He removed the keys from the ignition to prevent further driving and notified the local police commander of the incident.

Bribe Attempt

While the officer was on scene, the suspect tried to offer him 10,000 zł to withdraw from duty. The officer refused the bribe, and the attempt was reported to the authorities.

Arrest and Charges

The driver was taken to a police holding cell, where a breath test showed about 2 ‰ alcohol. He pleaded guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and to promising a financial benefit to a public officer, and the prosecutor imposed police supervision and a travel ban.

Potential Sentencing

According to prosecutor Elżbieta Edyta Łukasiewicz, the suspect faces up to eight years in prison for the alleged offences.
