A tragic accident occurred on April 12, 2026, in the Mszczonów municipality. The driver of a passenger Audi lost control of the vehicle while overtaking another car and collided with a tree, according to a statement from the prosecutor’s office.

The crash resulted in the death of a passenger in the vehicle. The suspect has been temporarily arrested for three months.

Driver Identified and Intoxication Level

Investigators have identified the driver as Roman M., a citizen of Ukraine. He had a blood alcohol level exceeding 2.5 promille.

The driver was traveling at a speed at least twice the legal limit of 90 km/h outside of a built-up area.

Prosecutor’s Statement

Prosecutor Bartosz Maliszewski, Spokesperson for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Płock, stated that Roman M. “grossly exceeded the permissible speed” while driving under the influence of alcohol (over 2.5‰).

Circumstances of the Accident

The accident occurred while the driver was overtaking other vehicles. Prosecutor Maliszewski reported that the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a roadside tree.

The passenger, Krystian M., died at the scene.

Speed Estimation

The estimated speed of the vehicle at the time of the accident was determined based on the testimony of at least four witnesses, the extent of the vehicle’s damage, and a preliminary expert opinion on traffic and accident reconstruction.

Charges and Arrest

The driver was detained by police and taken to the District Prosecutor’s Office in Żyrardów. He has been charged with driving under the influence and causing a fatal accident with a gross violation of traffic rules and excessive speed.

Confession and Detention Order

According to the prosecutor’s spokesperson, the suspect confessed to the charges and provided extensive statements consistent with the established facts.

Due to the lack of a permanent residence in the country and the potential for a lengthy prison sentence, the prosecution requested a detention order. The court granted the request, ordering a three-month temporary arrest.

Potential Penalties

Roman M. faces a prison sentence of 5 to 20 years for the alleged crimes.
