Drunk Driver Strikes Cyclist and Leads SOP Officers on High-Speed Chase Through Warsaw

A 24-year-old intoxicated driver struck a 37-year-old cyclist near Warsaw’s National Stadium on May 24, leading Służba Ochrony Państwa (SOP) officers on a reckless, high-speed pursuit against traffic.

The Pursuit and Collisions

The incident began around 2:10 PM on May 24 near the National Stadium in Warsaw, originating at a bike crossing on Wybrzeże Szczecińskie. The driver of a Toyota allegedly struck a 37-year-old cyclist and fled the scene.

SOP officers, who were stationary at a red light, witnessed the event and initiated a pursuit. The driver ignored commands to stop, turning the wrong way into Aleja Poniatowskiego and subsequently Aleja Zieleniecka, where the vehicle collided with a taxi and a city bus.

Arrest and Substance Findings

SOP officers apprehended the suspect at the scene of the final collision; no injuries were reported despite the impacts. Police arrived to take the 24-year-old Polish national into custody.

Breathalyzer testing indicated nearly 1.8 promille of alcohol. Additional screening revealed the presence of cocaine and methamphetamine in the driver’s system. Authorities also discovered a substance suspected to be mephedrone inside the vehicle.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings

The suspect’s vehicle has been impounded by police. Blood samples have been ordered to confirm the levels of intoxicants, and the man will undergo further questioning once he is sober.

Traffic near the intersection of Aleja Zieleniecka and Aleja Waszyngtona was partially restricted during the emergency response. Police continue to conduct an investigation into the incident.
