Former President Andrzej Duda has forcefully rejected speculation linking him to the vacant Kraków mayoralty, reflecting deeper political isolation as his post-presidency search for relevance continues to stall.
The Kraków Incident
According to Onet, Andrzej Duda reacted with indignation when his name appeared on a list of potential candidates to replace dismissed Kraków mayor Aleksander Miszalski. The former president dismissed the suggestion as insulting, stating he would not consider such a run.
PiS politicians have openly mocked the rumors, with one insider noting that the suggestion caused a stir in Kraków, describing the reaction as a collective sigh of exasperation among those who heard the speculation.
A Fading Political Legacy
The incident highlights Duda’s growing frustration following the end of his term. Paradoxically, the presidential election victory of Karol Nawrocki, whom Duda supported, has exacerbated his feeling of political obsolescence. Observers suggest that had Nawrocki lost, Duda would have remained the sole living two-term former president associated with the PiS party.
While Nawrocki builds political capital through conflict with the Donald Tusk government, Duda lacks similar influence. Having functioned largely as a party loyalist during his tenure, he has reportedly severed ties with Jarosław Kaczyński, and his interest in the premiership has been dismissed by party leadership at Nowogrodzka.
Post-Presidency Ventures
Duda has since pivoted to business and consultancy, joining the supervisory board of the fintech firm ZEN.COM. He has also established a consulting company, promoted his autobiography, and participated in international forums such as the Davos and Three Seas summits, alongside guest appearances at the Heritage Foundation.
His attempts to maintain a media presence have seen limited success. A 16-episode series produced for Kanal Zero, in which he discussed his presidency and current events, ran from September through December but ultimately failed to gain significant traction.
