Polish police have arrested a man and a woman in Warsaw for defrauding a victim out of 120,000 złoty (approximately €24,000) with a fabricated kaucja (bail) story.
Criminal Investigation Leads to Arrests
Detectives identified the suspects through extensive operational work. The 42-year-old woman and 51-year-old man were both arrested, having previously been convicted of fraud.
The victim was convinced to hand over 120,000 złoty, believing the money would cover bail for her grandson, who allegedly hit a pregnant woman while driving.
A Recurring Scam
This type of fraud is unfortunately common, despite ongoing preventative measures and warnings from authorities. Perpetrators exploit people’s willingness to help family members in distress.
The Deception Unfolds
The victim received a phone call from an imposter claiming to be a police “komendant” (commander), informing her of her grandson’s alleged involvement in an accident. They demanded money for bail.
An unknown man then collected the 120,000 złoty from the victim.
Swift Action and Apprehension
Upon learning of the case, police immediately launched an investigation, meticulously gathering and verifying information to identify the pair responsible. The man was already wanted for a previous fraud conviction with a two-year sentence outstanding.
Police first apprehended the 42-year-old woman. The 51-year-old man initially pretended he wasn’t home, then attempted to flee through the garden, but was caught by an awaiting officer.
Charges and Detention
Both suspects have been charged with jointly committing fraud as repeat offenders. Following a request from the Warsaw-Praga Południe District Prosecutor’s Office, a court ordered their temporary arrest.
The investigation is being supervised by the Warsaw-Praga Południe District Prosecutor’s Office.
