Each Structural Reveal Brings New Surprises: BGK Building Under Renovation

The historic BGK headquarters at Aleje Jerozolimskie 7 in Warsaw is undergoing a major renovation that has revealed extensive structural issues.

Project Overview

Located at Aleje Jerozolimskie 7, the BGK building dominates the Gen. de Gaulle roundabout and has served as the bank’s headquarters. Construction began in 1928–1931 and it was listed as a historic site in 1965.

Renovation Details and Deadline

The upgrade, launched formally in 2022 and accelerated in December 2023, includes full interior refurbishment, strengthening of the concrete‑steel frame, replacement of certain floor slabs and fittings, new lifts, skylight reconstruction over operating rooms, and modern conference spaces. It is managed by JEMS Architekci, with Korporacja Budowlana Doraco as the main contractor, and is slated to finish on 30 September 2027 with a contract value of about 600 million PLN gross.

Structural Complications Uncovered

During exposure of the framework, extensive reinforcements were required, notably repairing historic ceiling beams. This prompted contract amendments and schedule revisions, while the construction crew described the building as “still surprising us, gutted inside like a heart.”

Effect on Bank Operations

While renovations continue, BGK’s headquarters temporarily operates from Varso 2 at Chmielna 73, though the bank’s official address remains unchanged.

Historical Context and Preservation Goals

Designed by Rudolf Świerczyński, the structure survived 1939 bombardment thanks to its robust concrete frame, later expanded after the war. The investor aims to restore prewar representativeness of key spaces while preserving the valuable historic material, blending classic architecture with contemporary functions.
