A CASE analysis reveals Polish consumers will pay 12.8% more for select food products this Easter compared to last year, driven by soaring chocolate prices.
Chocolate Dominates Price Increases
A Friday analysis by the Centre for Social and Economic Analysis (CASE) indicates that the Easter shopping basket, comprising 26 products, will cost 12.8% more this year than in 2025.
The significant increase is primarily attributed to the high price of dark chocolate; excluding it, the basket’s price increase would have been limited to 1.8%. This highlights the substantial impact a single product can have on overall costs.
Unexpected Price Drops in Meat and Dairy
Despite the overall increase, many essential products are cheaper than during Easter 2025. The most significant price decreases were observed in specific items.
Rye bread, ham, and carrots also saw notable price reductions.
Eggs and Sweets Lead Price Hikes
Conversely, certain products will significantly impact consumers’ budgets.
The most substantial price increases were recorded for eggs and confectionery.
Moderate Increases for Other Products
Moderate price increases (ranging from 5 to 16%) were observed for mayonnaise, horseradish, tea, orange juice, and natural yogurt. Analysts attribute this variation to seasonal supply fluctuations and cost pressures in transport and energy sectors.
Indirect Impact of Middle East Conflict
Economists added that the conflict in the Middle East also contributed to price increases, albeit indirectly. This primarily affects the costs of oil, gas, and fertilizers.
Disruptions in the Red Sea region could lead to increased maritime freight costs on the Asia-Europe route. However, for most products in the Easter basket – particularly those based on domestic supply like eggs, dairy, bread, and flour – the direct impact on March retail prices appears limited.
