Elderly Pedestrian Struck by Garbage Truck in Warsaw

An 80-year-old woman was hospitalized on Saturday afternoon after her arm was crushed under the wheel of a garbage truck while she was crossing Mangalia Street in Warsaw’s Mokotów district.

The Incident and Rescue Operation

On Saturday, June 6, at approximately 1:40 PM, a garbage truck driver struck an elderly woman on Mangalia Street. The pedestrian’s arm became trapped under the vehicle’s front right tire. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene, where they utilized pneumatic lifting bags to raise the truck and extract the victim.

Emergency responders provided medical aid to the woman before transporting her to a Warsaw hospital. Two fire department units, two medical rescue teams, and the police were present to handle the rescue and site safety.

Circumstances of the Collision

Initial findings indicate the driver was reversing in a lane when he stopped to allow another car to leave a parking space. As he moved forward, the pedestrian attempted to cross in front of the truck near the cab. The vehicle’s movement caused the woman to fall and resulted in her arm being crushed by the wheel.

Traffic Safety Concerns

Officers from the Traffic Department’s accident investigation section are currently determining the exact sequence of events. Local residents noted that pedestrians frequently walk in the middle of the road in the Mangalia and Panamska area, despite the street not being designated as a residential zone where specific traffic priority rules for pedestrians would apply.
