End to Radio in Rooms, Phones in Bathrooms: Revolution in Hotel Star Ratings

Poland proposes over 60 changes to hotel star rating requirements, modernizing regulations while reducing unnecessary obligations.

Proposed Regulatory Changes

A draft amendment to regulations for hotel establishments and other facilities offering hotel services is ready for consultation. The proposal includes over 60 changes to requirements that must be met by hotel establishments to receive specific star ratings, which are issued by provincial marshals.

The goal is to reduce unnecessary obligations, eliminate or relax certain requirements (including technical ones) to adapt to modern realities. The changes also consider environmental protection needs and the dynamic development of new technologies shaping service delivery in the sector.

Specific Changes for Hotels and Motels

The ministry proposes relaxing certain installation requirements and removing selected outdated technical and construction requirements. A change is also proposed for how hotel room area is calculated, allowing a possible deviation of up to 10% from the required living area, provided the room’s functionality is maintained.

Additionally, part of the required smaller equipment items will be removed. New requirements will be introduced for solutions that are already market standards today.

Changes for Campsites

The changes will also affect campsites, with plans to introduce monitoring and replace the requirement to receive radio programs with access to Wi-Fi signal.

Consultation Process

The draft regulation is scheduled to enter public consultations and inter-departmental agreements on Friday, February 27, with a duration of 21 days. This period will allow entrepreneurs and industry organizations to propose corrections.

It should be noted that provincial marshals conduct hotel categorization, assigning star ratings to hotels, motels, and other facilities, changing or retracting ratings when requirements are not met, and maintaining a register of facilities.
