Denmark deploys military and equipment to Greenland amid Trump’s demands for US control of the strategic territory.
Denmark Sends Military to Greenland
On Wednesday, January 14, it was reported that Denmark is sending military forces and equipment to Greenland. This is in response to statements by Donald Trump and other American politicians who say the US must take control of Greenland for security reasons. Danish media reported that the task of the forces sent to Greenland will be to prepare the island logistically to receive a larger contingent.
The Greenland government emphasized in its statement that the decision to increase military activity and send Danish troops to the island was made “in close cooperation with NATO allies.”
Swedish Officers Deploy to Greenland
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced that his country has also decided to send its forces to Greenland. “Today, officers from the Swedish Armed Forces are arriving in Greenland. They belong to a group from several allied countries. Together they will prepare for next steps as part of Danish exercises ‘Operation Arctic Endurance’. At Denmark’s request, Sweden is sending personnel from its armed forces,” he wrote on X.
Trump Appeals to NATO
Donald Trump reacted to Denmark’s decision to send military forces to Greenland. In a post published on Truth Social, he appealed to NATO to pressure Denmark and persuade it to withdraw its forces from the island. The US president emphasized that this must happen “immediately.”
Trump repeated earlier, ironic remarks aimed at the Danish military. He wrote that “two dog teams won’t be enough” to guarantee Greenland’s security and protect it from actions by Russia and China. He added that only the US can do this.
Trump Claims Greenland is Essential for NATO Strength
Trump stated that Greenland is essential for the US to build a missile defense system called “Golden Dome.” He emphasized that if Americans don’t take control of Greenland, China or Russia will.
“Militarily, without the enormous power of the United States, which I largely built during my first term, and now I am bringing to a new, even higher level, NATO would not be an effective force or deterrent – not at all! They know it, I know it too. NATO will become much more formidable and effective when Greenland is in the hands of the United States. Anything else is unacceptable,” Trump wrote.
US, Denmark and Greenland to Meet in Washington
In Washington on Wednesday, talks will be held with the participation of US, Danish and Greenland representatives. US Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are expected to speak with the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland about tensions caused by Donald Trump’s statements about the island.
The meeting will also address the issue of security in the Arctic region.
