Operational Progress on the Eastern Frontier
Estonian Interior Minister Igor Taro visited the country’s southeastern border on Friday, May 29, to inspect ongoing security enhancements. Official reports confirm that construction is proceeding according to plan, with expectations that certain sections of the border fortification project will be completed ahead of schedule.
New Eyes on the Border
Authorities have begun installing specialized equipment designed to detect and monitor drones, colloquially dubbed “eyes” by security services. These are complemented by new mobile observation systems deployed earlier this year, which provide coverage in areas currently lacking permanent infrastructure or requiring temporary surveillance.
Infrastructure and Operational Reach
A new bridge over the Piusa River has been completed, significantly improving the mobility of border guards by allowing vehicular access to the opposite bank. These projects, which aim to enhance patrol efficacy and threat response, are partially funded by the European Union.
Long-term Security Strategy
Current initiatives remain focused on maximizing visibility and rapid response capabilities to prevent illegal crossings. Plans include the construction of 14 radar towers and an 80-kilometer access road along the northeastern border, with the total investment slated for completion by 2027.
