EU-US Deal Shelved as Europe Considers ‘Trade Bazooka’

The US threatens escalating tariffs on European nations over Greenland plans, complicating the EU-US trade agreement ratified last July.

US Tariffs Target European Nations

The US plans to impose additional 10% tariffs on February 1 against Denmark, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Norway, and the UK, which are trying to block Trump’s Greenland acquisition plans.

Escalating Tariff Threat

Washington has warned that if no agreement is reached, tariffs will rise to 25% starting June 1.

Complicating Trade Deal Ratification

The Republican administration’s tariff threats have complicated the ratification process of the EU-US trade agreement, which was reached in July 2025 during Ursula von der Leyen’s visit to Trump’s golf resort in Scotland.

July 2025 Trade Agreement Terms

Under the agreement, European products sold to the US would face 15% tariffs, while US exports to Europe would benefit from zero tariffs.

Avoiding Trade War

The European Commission states that partial implementation helped avoid a trade war, as Washington had been prepared to impose tariffs of several dozen percent on the EU.
