Following a US Supreme Court ruling on Trump-era tariffs, the European Commission seeks clarity on Washington’s next steps as the US president announces a global tariff increase to 15 percent.
Supreme Court Ruling Invalidates Trump-Era Tariffs
The European Commission is demanding full clarity on the steps Washington intends to take following Friday’s ruling by the US Supreme Court on the Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The judges ruled illegal the tariffs that the Donald Trump administration imposed under IEEPA on imported goods from almost all parts of the world, including the EU.
Trump Announces Global Tariff Increase
In reaction to what he called an “absurd” and “anti-American” ruling, Trump announced the introduction of a global base tariff of 10 percent. He cited a provision that allows the president to impose tariffs for up to 150 days without congressional approval in case of “serious balance of payments deficits.” The next day, the US president announced raising the rate to 15 percent. It is set to take effect on Tuesday.
