An explosion at a facility storing mining explosives in the village of Kaungtup, Myanmar, near the Chinese border, has resulted in at least 46 fatalities and dozens of injuries.

According to local independent media and rescue workers, 46 bodies have been recovered from the ruins, with 74 injured individuals transported to a nearby hospital. Estimates regarding the total death toll vary significantly between sources, with some reports from local agencies citing between 50 and 55 fatalities.
An anonymous rescue worker from Namhkam reported approximately 40 deaths and noted that over 100 houses in the vicinity were damaged. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV has confirmed numerous casualties and widespread property damage without providing specific figures.

The explosion occurred on Sunday, May 31, in the village of Kaungtup, located in the Namhkam district of northeastern Myanmar. The site is situated just 3 kilometers from the Chinese border in an area controlled by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army.
The local governing authority stated via Telegram that the facility was used by the economic department to store explosive gelatin intended for mining and quarrying operations. An investigation into the cause of the explosion is currently underway, as improper storage of such materials can render them highly unstable.
