An explosion occurred at the MOL Olefin-1 facility in Tiszaújváros on Friday morning during a post-maintenance restart, resulting in one fatality and seven serious injuries according to Hungarian officials.
Incident and Emergency Response
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar confirmed that a compressor explosion triggered the incident during the plant’s restart process. Emergency teams were deployed to the site, and although a pipeline caught fire, officials reported no hazardous substance concentrations exceeding safety limits.
Mayor Fülöp György stated that the fire was successfully extinguished by approximately 10:00 AM. Government officials, including the Minister of Economy and Energy and the CEO of MOL, were expected to arrive at the site to oversee the situation and provide further details.

The affected Olefin-1 plant is part of the MOL Petrochemical complex, which is responsible for the annual production of approximately 200,000 tons of polyol, a raw material used in manufacturing insulation and mattresses.
