The Russian Investigative Committee reported that on Monday, December 22, an explosive charge detonated beneath a vehicle on Jasieniewa Street in Moscow. The blast killed the head of the Operational Training Department of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, General Fanil Sarwarow, per the agency’s statement.

Investigators examined the crime scene and requested forensic analysis of the explosives. Witness interviews are ongoing, and surveillance footage is being reviewed. The Moscow Office of the Investigative Committee has launched criminal proceedings concerning the violent murder and illegal handling of explosive materials, noting that the case “may have been organized by Ukrainian special services.”
Background on General Sarwarow
Gen. Sarwarow was born March 11, 1969, in the Perm region. Throughout his career he held key military posts, including orchestrating operations in Syria during 2015‑2016. Since 2016 he has served in his current role. He received the Order of Courage, the Suvorov Medal, and the Order “For Merit to the Fatherland.”
