Russian Kamchatka region battles extreme weather conditions as heavy snow traps residents and causes two deaths.
Fatal Snow Incidents
Russian police on Thursday, January 15, reported that Kamchatka is struggling with “extreme weather conditions.” As a result, many residents have been trapped in the snow. Two people have died, including a 62-year-old resident of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky who was killed when heavy snow fell from a private building roof.
A similar incident occurred in the same city on Soviet Street, where ice fell from a roof onto a 60-year-old man, reported the Lenta.ru portal.
Road Disruptions and Rescue Efforts
The snow has also caused significant road difficulties. Governor of Kamchatka Vladimir Solodov reported on January 13 that an avalanche came down on Naberezhnaya Street in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, covering the road and causing major traffic issues.
Equipment and rescue services have been sent to the scene to clear the area and ensure residents’ safety. No one was injured in the avalanche. The governor has appealed for special caution and advised residents to stay home. Two days later, police reported that traffic inspectors continue working at full capacity.
Cyclone and State of Emergency
According to the Kamchatka Hydrometeorological Center, the heavy snowfall was caused by a cyclone from the Sea of Okhotsk that hit the region on January 12-16, reported RIA Novosti. In response, Mayor Evgeny Belyaev declared a state of emergency in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, reported the RBC portal.
Authorities conducted nearly 130 inspections in the region. “The situation remains difficult due to abnormally large amounts of precipitation. Since January 1, there have been 19 failures in the regional capital,” reported the Kamchatka Territory Prosecutor’s Office.
