A powerful winter storm bringing heavy snow and freezing rain threatens over 200 million Americans from New Mexico to New England.
Major Winter Storm Hits US
“Today, a powerful winter storm begins,” wrote the National Weather Service (NWS) on Friday, January 23. It will bring intense snow and freezing rain affecting an area from New Mexico to New England. Extremely cold air will also move into this region, potentially prolonging dangerous conditions into next week.
Warnings for Millions
According to AP News, at least 177 million people are under ice and snow warnings, with more than 200 million under frost warnings. Experts predict possible long-term power outages and significant traffic disruptions due to impassable roads. In many cases, car travel will be impossible, with hundreds of flights already canceled.
New York Prepares for Heavy Snow
Winter will be particularly challenging for New York, where the heaviest snowfall in years is expected. “At every level of government, we are ready to help our residents. Appropriate services will be working on the streets, and we also provide shelter for those in need in specially prepared facilities,” said New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani. A state of emergency has already been declared in many parts of the country.
