Failed ICBM Test Sparks Mysterious Purple Cloud at Russian Range

A failed intercontinental ballistic missile test at Russia’s Jasnyj test range in Orenburg Oblast produced a high‑altitude explosion and a visible purple toxic cloud.

Explosion Timing and Physical Characteristics

The missile rose 200‑400 metres before detonating in the air. Fragments fell to the ground, leaving a visible purple cloud described as toxic. The colour is characteristic of highly toxic propellants used in some Soviet missile systems.

Jasnyj Range and Its Strategic Role

The Jasnyj site houses both a cosmodrome and a Russian strategic missile base. It is one of the few locations capable of launching long‑range and intercontinental ballistic missiles carrying nuclear warheads.

Related October Explosion at Afghan Factory

In late October, another blast occurred at a factory producing explosives in Sterlitamak, Russia. The Bashkortostan president reported that one building was destroyed, three women were killed, and five people were injured. The factory was cited as performing a national mission.

Legal and Safety Implications

Local prosecutors have opened an investigation into potential violations of safety and occupational health regulations at the facility.
