In August, impostors posing as municipal officials entered the homes of two 82‑year‑old women in Warsaw’s Praga‑Północ district, stole jewelry and cash totaling nearly 50,000 PLN, and are now facing up to five years in prison.
Water‑Quality Checks Turn Into Heists
On August 11, two men and women claiming to be administrative staff knocked on the door of an 82‑year‑old woman on Żuromińska Street. Pretending to test the water, they entered her apartment and, while the victim was distracted, stole gold chains, rings, a bracelet, an earring, and 23,500 PLN in cash. The total loss for the victim was nearly 50,000 PLN. A second robbery occurred on August 22 at Krasiczyńska Street, where the same duo stole 1,200 PLN from another 82‑year‑old woman’s wallet.
Police Trace and Arrest the Duo
Criminal officers from the Chodecka Police Station investigated the complaints, carried out extensive operational work to identify the suspects, and arrested a 33‑year‑old man and his 25‑year‑old partner on Monday at Środkowa Street in Praga‑Północ. The man was wanted under a warrant issued by the District Court in Nowy Targ for a previous three‑year sentence and is now charged with robbery as a recidivist, while the 25‑year‑old is under prosecution scrutiny.
Court Hears Sentencing, Recidivist Faces 7½ Years
Both suspects were arraigned at the Warsaw Praga‑Północ District Prosecutor’s Office. The court warned the 25‑year‑old that she could face up to five years in prison, whereas the 33‑year‑old, acting as a repeat offender, faces up to seven and a half years. Prosecutors requested temporary detention for the 33‑year‑old, who was subsequently remanded into investigative custody.
Prosecution Oversees Legal Proceedings
Oversight over the case continues with the Warsaw Praga‑Północ Prosecutor’s Office. The pair are slated to answer for the theft charges, which carry penalties of up to five years, and the court proceedings will determine the final sentences.
