Family of Warsaw University Murder Victim Questions Psychiatric Evaluation of Suspect Mieszko R.

Warsaw University murder suspect Mieszko R. faces criticism as family representatives challenge incomplete psychiatric evaluation recommending his commitment.

Psychiatric Evaluation and Recommendations

Mieszko R., suspected of killing a University of Warsaw employee, desecrating her body, and attempting to murder a campus security guard, underwent psychiatric evaluation beginning September 1, 2025. The evaluation took place at a psychiatric hospital in Jarosław, where the 22-year-old spent eight weeks.

Psychiatric experts submitted a approximately 200-page report in January 2026, concluding that Mieszko R. was not criminally responsible at the time of the crimes due to his mental condition. They recommended the dismissal of the case and his placement in a closed psychiatric facility, citing a high probability that he could commit similar acts in the future.

Family’s Objections to Psychiatric Findings

The victim’s family representative, attorney Sylwia Piechocińska-Para, expressed reservations about the psychiatric evaluation, describing it as “incomplete and unclear” in statements to Gazeta.pl. She questioned what assessment tools were used to evaluate the suspect’s mental condition and whether experts considered the possibility of him faking his illness.

“A supplementary opinion from experts is necessary,” Piechocińska-Para stated, noting that her objections would be submitted by March 13. The defense has not raised similar concerns about the psychiatric evaluation.

Controversial Facility Recommendation

The psychiatric experts recommended placing Mieszko R. in a facility in Gostyninie, which exclusively accepts previously convicted individuals who are mentally healthy but have behavioral disorders. This recommendation contradicts the suspect’s diagnosed mental illness.

“The proposal regarding the suspect’s detention in the National Center for Prevention of Dissociative Behaviors is extremely erroneous and contrary to legal provisions,” Piechocińska-Para emphasized. The facility, established after February 2015, only accepts individuals previously deprived of freedom and convicted before that date, making it inappropriate for a mentally ill suspect not previously convicted.

Charges Against Mieszko R.

Mieszko R. faces charges of murdering a University of Warsaw employee and desecrating her body on May 7, as well as attempting to murder a campus security guard. During his arrest on May 22, the 22-year-old bit an officer in the leg while being placed in a restraint jacket, leading to an additional charge of bodily harm to an officer.
