FBI Arrests Former CNN Presenter Amid “Unprecedented Attack on Press Freedom”

Former CNN host Don Lemon arrested by FBI while covering Grammy preparations after participating in church protest.

Federal Arrests Former CNN Host

Former CNN presenter Don Lemon was arrested Thursday evening, January 30th, by federal authorities in connection with a protest against immigration services. The demonstration was intended to disrupt a church service in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Church Protest Details

The incident occurred in mid-January when a group of demonstrators entered the Cities Church, claiming one of the pastors holds a leadership position in a local ICE office. Lemon broadcast the event live, explaining he was performing journalistic work.

CNN reports federal agents also detained independent journalist Georgia Fort in connection with the case.

Legal Charges and Response

Lemon was charged with conspiracy to violate civil rights and violation of the FACE Act, which protects access to places of worship. He was arrested in Los Angeles while covering Grammy preparations.

CNN called the arrest “deeply troubling” regarding press freedom and the First Amendment, which prohibits laws restricting freedom of religion, press, speech, petition, and assembly.

Trump Administration Reaction

After the protests, the Trump administration announced a decisive response to disruptions in places of worship. Attorney General Pam Bondi warned the Department of Justice would prosecute federal law violations.

Lemon’s lawyer called the arrest an “unprecedented attack on press freedom” and vowed to fight in court, noting a previous federal judge had deemed evidence insufficient.
