FBI Layoffs Ahead of Iran Military Operation Amid Trump Document Probe

FBI employees and officials were fired for roles in the Trump documents investigation just before potential Iran military action.

FBI Layoffs Tied to Trump Investigation

According to CNN sources, employees were fired for participating in the investigation into alleged improper storage of secret documents by President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago. The CI-12 unit handles such cases as mishandling classified documents or tracking foreign spies operating in the US.

For the same reasons, some high-ranking officials were also removed or reassigned. In late February, Wyborcza.pl reported that the FBI had fired ten agents who were investigating the current US president’s illegal retention of restricted documents.

Concerns Over Iran Operations

The firings of agents and employees raised concerns that investigations following a military operation in Iran could be hindered by a mass exodus of national security experts. The FBI declined to comment on personnel matters but stated in a CNN statement that the bureau is conducting “robust counterintelligence operations with personnel deployed across the country.”

Our teams remain fully engaged nationwide and are prepared to mobilize any security resources needed to assist federal partners as well as state and local law enforcement agencies, an FBI spokesperson told CNN.

Iran Threat Assessment

During Donald Trump’s first term, the CI-12 unit played a key role in tracking potential threats from the Iranian regime in retaliation for the 2020 attack that killed Gen. Qasem Soleimani, then-leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force.

In August of last year, a special report detailed how Iran recruited foreign agents, their tools, and methods of operation. There is no evidence of increased threats or activation of “sleeper agents” since the initial US attacks on Iran, CNN sources say. However, US law enforcement has intensified threat monitoring.

DOJ Staffing Crisis

The US Department of Justice has for decades worked to thwart threats from Iran-backed entities on US soil, including terrorist attacks or kidnappings. Like the CI-12 unit, its teams have been decimated by a wave of layoffs and resignations during Trump’s presidency, raising concerns that the DOJ may be unprepared for further attacks.

Many offices in the DOJ’s National Security Division have lost at least half their staff. High-ranking FBI officials who oversaw counterintelligence and international counterterrorism operations have been sidelined, CNN reports.

Pattern of Firings

These are not the first such firings at the FBI. Last year, Kash Patel fired three high-ranking officials who had sued him. As CNN reports, the reason given was their involvement in the Trump investigation.

Attacking Iran eight months before the elections, Donald Trump is playing a high-stakes game. If he stumbles, he will pay dearly for it, writes Maciej Czarnecki on Wyborcza.pl.
