A federal court in New York has removed the death penalty charges against Luigi Mangione, accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
No Longer Facing Death Penalty
Luigi Mangione is accused of murdering Brian Thompson, CEO of health insurance company UnitedHealthcare, which occurred on December 4, 2024, in Manhattan. The man faces both state and federal charges. On Friday (January 30), a federal court in New York removed two key charges from the federal indictment against Luigi Mangione – the charge of murder with a weapon and the charge of illegal possession of a weapon. This means the man no longer faces the death penalty.
It should be emphasized that the federal proceeding continues in connection with other charges, and Mangione also still answers to the New York state court for crimes related to the murder.
Background of Luigi Mangione
Luigi Mangione comes from a wealthy family. His parents sent him to a private school, and he completed his studies at an elite institution – the University of Pennsylvania. In 2022, he was injured in a surfing accident, which significantly worsened a spinal condition he had suffered from since childhood – spondylolisthesis. Due to health problems, he underwent surgery.
Later, several months before the murder of Brian Thompson, he disappeared. He was only found again as a suspect in the murder case.
Legal Proceedings
In 2024, a grand jury of the New York State Court on Manhattan brought several charges against Luigi Mangione, including first-degree murder, initially classified as an act of terrorism, as well as document forgery. However, the state court rejected the “terrorist” charges. It deemed them insufficiently proven.
In April 2025, the man was formally charged in federal court. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi requested that federal prosecutors seek the death penalty for the accused. Ultimately, the federal court dismissed the possibility of its application, but federal proceedings still remain charges that could result in a maximum life sentence.
Public Reaction
The case has sparked widespread public reactions in the United States, including criticism of the healthcare system and insurance companies, as well as reviving the debate about the costs of medical treatment. Luigi Mangione himself has gained numerous supporters in social media, and his supporters gathered in front of the courthouse on Manhattan, holding banners expressing support.
The Murder and Motive
The incident occurred on December 4, 2024. In the center of New York, a masked perpetrator shot Brian Thompson, who was heading to the New York Hilton hotel where the annual investor conference of the company he led was to take place. The assailant fired several shots at him, then ran across the street and fled on a bicycle toward Central Park.
On the bullet casings, the perpetrator wrote “deny,” “defend,” and “depose” (“to deny,” “to defend,” “to eliminate”). This was a reference to the slogan “delay, deny, defend,” which describes practices used by American insurance giants when considering claims for coverage of medical treatment costs.
